This just in: The Utah Republican Party Central Committee is considering buying the Utah Grizzlies hockey team. The strategy for success would be to eliminate all players except the right wings.
---
Mitt Romney may have survived the primaries to win the Republican nomination for president in 2012. He may have faced Evander Holyfield in the boxing ring. But those were nothing compared to the challenge of winning support from the Utah Republican Party.
---
Romney’s mistake was to declare himself a Republican before passing the physical and psychological tests.
---
Some state GOP leaders recently toyed with changing the rules in a way that would have effectively keep Mitt Romney off the ballot in the race for the U.S. Senate. They abandoned that idea, but then decided to apply those rules to two congressional district races, instead. Observers say this is illegal and might lead to the state disqualifying the Republican Party. It remains to be seen whether Utah’s Democrats, cryogenically frozen for several decades, can be revived in time to take advantage in November.

Meanwhile, don’t let anyone tell you the Utah Legislature is taking it easy. Lawmakers are hard at work trying to reduce the penalty for holding a raccoon or coyote captive from a class B misdemeanor to a simple infraction. I’m guessing raccoons and coyotes can’t afford very powerful lobbyists.
---
If you were trying to capture a lot of raccoons and coyotes, paying a fine would be the least of your worries.
---
Also, lawmakers are working on a bill that makes it legal to run red lights under certain circumstances. Be honest now, you thought that already was legal, didn’t you?
---
The Utah Legislature also is considering a bill that would outlaw the death penalty. It’s hard to get excited about that in a state with raccoons and coyotes running loose and cars running red lights.
