On Second Thought for March 27, 2017

A lighthearted look at news of the day

Now local politicians say they want to build a fence to keep wealthy business people in expensive clothes from jaywalking across the street to shop the Gateway in Salt Lake City. … Oh wait, no, that was to keep homeless people from jaywalking.
---
Imagine if wealthy business people were jaywalking to get to shopping areas. That probably would get all the attention the proposed wall along the Canadian border is getting. Oh wait …
---
Rumor has it the federal government has offered to build the fence between the Gateway and the homeless shelter and to force the homeless to pay for it.
---
A report last week ranked the U.S. as the 14th happiest nation on earth, which ought to make us all unhappy.
---
It's true. You could go to 13 other nations and be happier than you are now -- until you get the bill for hotels and airfare.
---
FBI Director James Comey won't comment on an investigation into possible ties between the Russians and President Trump's election campaign — unless he were to find some of Hillary's deleted emails in the process, that is.
----
The Kremlin, meanwhile, said there was no link between them and the Trump campaign, and that they're picking up some interesting conversations at Hillary's house we may all be interested in hearing.
---
Honestly, we're missing the mark here. Everyone is focused on last year's election, but nobody is paying attention to what Russian meddling has done to my March Madness bracket.
---
Oh, I suppose Middle Tennessee State really beat Minnesota all on its own.
---
Twitter celebrated its 11th birthday this month. Just think, before 2006 Donald Trump had to go door-to-door to share what was going on in his mind.
---
Reason magazine this month features a report that compares Franklin Roosevelt with Donald Trump. Both hated critical media reports. Both tried to make the media irrelevant by speaking directly to the public — Trump with tweets, FDR with fireside chats. We all remember the famous fireside chats titled, "Bread lines getting longer? Fake news!" and "Hitler in Poland: Sad."

    Ha! Ha! Ha!

Everyone likes to laugh. Some of us even like to groan occasionally. Well, you've come to the right place. "On second thought" is a weekly feature I  produce for the Deseret News, available on Mondays. But here you can read them as I think of them.
Oh yes, and if you've got something even funnier, post it in the comments. If I like it, I may use it.
